Edwin Roberts Russell (1913–1996) was an African American chemist whose scientific career extended from the secret laboratories of the Manhattan Project to nuclear research, higher education, and atomic-energy research after World War II. A graduate of Benedict College and Howard University, Russell joined the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory while pursuing further graduate study in surface chemistry. There, he worked as a research chemist on the difficult problem of isolating and extracting plutonium-239 from uranium. After the war, his career included work connected to Argonne National Laboratory, leadership as Professor of Chemistry and Chairman of the Division of Science at Allen University, and more than two decades as a research chemist at DuPont's Savannah River Laboratory. He also helped develop patented processes involving plutonium separation, fission-product recovery, and radioactive-waste treatment.

At first glance, the article is simply a faculty listing with a group photograph. But the brief descriptions and titles in the article greatly understate the historical impact of many of the people pictured.
In retrospect, the photograph captures an extraordinary community of Black scholars whose work would influence American education, science, history, psychology, international affairs, and mathematics.
Ralph Bunche — Political Science: Howard professor and political scientist who would later receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1950, for his work mediating the Arab-Israeli conflict.
William Leo Hansberry — History: A pioneering scholar of African history who helped establish the study of African civilization within American higher education and taught some of the earliest courses on African history in the United States.
Elbert F. Cox — Mathematics: In 1925, Cox earned a Ph.D. in mathematics. He later joined Howard University, where he helped build and strengthen its mathematics program.
Francis C. Sumner — Psychology: Sumner earned his doctorate in 1920 and went on to establish and lead Howard University's psychology department. He is often called the “Father of Black Psychology.”
Among these remarkable scholars was Edwin R. Russell, identified here as a chemistry professor. This photograph therefore provides contemporary evidence that Russell was already teaching chemistry at Howard before his later work connected him to the Manhattan Project.
