Robert Curry Owens — Building on Biddy Mason’s Legacy

Entrepreneur • Real Estate Developer • Community Leader

Robert Curry Owens believed that wealth should be used to create lasting opportunities for future generations. Building upon the foundation established by earlier generations, he demonstrated how careful investment, responsible stewardship, and community leadership could produce lasting prosperity despite the barriers of racial discrimination. While Owens's portrait introduces the businessman and civic leader behind these achievements, the elegant residential interior reflects the success and stability that Black entrepreneurship made possible for a growing number of families during the early twentieth century. Together, these images illustrate that Owens's legacy extended beyond financial success to the creation of opportunity, security, and hope for those who followed.

Overview:

Robert Curry Owens (ca. 1859–ca. 1932)  was one of the most successful African American businessmen in the history of Los Angeles. Born into two pioneering Black families, he was the grandson of Bridget “Biddy” Mason, a formerly enslaved woman who became one of California’s wealthiest landowners. Owens studied business and learned the value of hard work from an early age. After inheriting property from both his father and grandmother, he expanded the family’s real estate holdings and built new businesses. By the early 1900s, his properties were worth about $250,000, making him one of the wealthiest African Americans on the West Coast. Owens also became a political leader, community supporter, and advocate for educational opportunities. His success challenged racial barriers during a time when African Americans faced widespread discrimination and limited opportunities.

Robert Curry Owens and his wife, Anna Dugged Owens, were among the early African American families who helped shape the growth of Los Angeles through entrepreneurship, property ownership, and community leadership. Their lives reflected the aspirations of a growing Black middle class at the turn of the twentieth century, demonstrating that African Americans were building businesses, accumulating property, and contributing to the city's development decades before the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Why This Story Matters

Robert C. Owens matters because he showed that African Americans could build wealth, influence, and leadership despite the barriers of racism. At a time when many Black Americans were denied equal opportunities, Owens owned valuable land, operated successful businesses, and helped shape the growth of Los Angeles. He also used his resources to support education and community advancement. Owens worked across racial lines as a political leader while remaining committed to improving opportunities for African Americans. His life challenges the idea that only white Americans played important roles in building cities, businesses, and institutions in the United States. His story helps us better understand the diverse people who helped shape the nation.

Legacy:

Robert C. Owens left behind a legacy of business success, political leadership, and community advancement that helped shape African American life in Los Angeles. One of his most important achievements was the development of the Owens Business Block along Spring Street, which housed several Black-owned businesses and became a major center of African American economic activity. At a time when segregation and discrimination limited opportunities, Owens used his wealth, land ownership, and business skills to create spaces where Black entrepreneurs could work, grow, and succeed. His investments strengthened the local economy and expanded opportunities for future generations.

Owens's success also created opportunities for his family. He shared his life with his wife, Annie Owens, and their daughters, Gladys and Manila Owens. Historical records tell us far less about Annie, Gladys, and Manila than they do about Robert, but they were part of the family whose name became closely connected to Black achievement and prosperity in Los Angeles. Owens purchased an elegant home for his family in a predominantly white neighborhood, reflecting both his financial success and his determination to challenge the racial barriers of his time.

Beyond his business accomplishments, Owens believed in the power of education and community support. He contributed to the Tuskegee Institute and provided financial assistance to students in need, helping others pursue opportunities that were often denied to African Americans. Through his political involvement and civic leadership, he worked to advance the interests of Black residents while building relationships across racial lines. Although his influence declined as new leaders emerged, his impact on Black business, education, and civic life remained significant. Today, his story reminds us that African Americans—and the families who stood beside them—played vital roles in building wealth, developing cities, and shaping the history and growth of the United States.

Discussion Questions:

1. Robert Curry Owens built businesses and invested in property as Los Angeles was growing. Why can owning land or a business create opportunities that earning a paycheck alone may not?

2. Owning a home or business often gives people a greater voice in their community. Why do you think property ownership has been important throughout American history?

3. Owens came from a family that valued education, hard work, and community leadership. How might a person's family history and community support shape their sense of belonging and ability to overcome barriers?

Reflection Prompt:

1. Robert C. Owens was a successful Black businessman at a time when racial discrimination was common. Even with his success, he still faced challenges that many white business owners did not. At the same time, he had opportunities that many other African Americans did not because of his education, family, and property. What does his life teach us about how race, gender, disability, religion, family support, and access to resources can shape a person's opportunities?
