Jeremiah G. Hamilton — Black Millionaire and Wall Street Investor

Investor • Financier • Wall Street Pioneer

Jeremiah G. Hamilton built a reputation through financial skill rather than public recognition. Although he became Wall Street's first known Black millionaire, no confirmed photograph of Hamilton is known to exist today. The portrait displayed here has long been associated with him, but historians have not been able to verify its authenticity. That uncertainty serves as a reminder that the lives of many influential African Americans were not preserved with the same care as those of their white contemporaries. Yet Hamilton's legacy does not depend on a surviving portrait. His success is documented through newspapers, court records, financial transactions, and business dealings that established him as one of the most remarkable investors of the nineteenth century. Together, the attributed portrait and accompanying note remind us that while some historical images remain uncertain, Hamilton's extraordinary achievements and lasting influence on American finance are firmly established.

Overview:

Jeremiah G. Hamilton (ca. 1807–1875) was one of the most successful and controversial businessmen in 19th-century America. Often called the "Prince of Darkness," he became the first known Black millionaire on Wall Street at a time when African Americans faced severe discrimination and limited opportunities. Hamilton worked as a stock trader, real estate investor, ship owner, and financier in New York City. He bought and sold property, invested in businesses, and developed investment strategies that resembled modern hedge funds. By the time of his death, newspapers across the country reported that he was the wealthiest Black person in the United States. Hamilton accumulated enormous wealth despite operating in a business world dominated almost entirely by white men. His life demonstrates both the opportunities and dangers of pursuing financial success in a deeply unequal society.

Jeremiah G. Hamilton battled Cornelius Vanderbilt and won more than just his respect

In 1856, the New-York Daily Tribune reported on one of the many legal disputes between Jeremiah G. Hamilton and Cornelius Vanderbilt involving the Accessory Transit Company. Hamilton appeared as attorney for the company in a bitter fight over its assets, management, and control during one of Wall Street's most contentious business conflicts. The article demonstrates that Hamilton was not a peripheral figure, but a skilled lawyer and financier trusted to represent major business interests against one of the nation's most powerful industrialists.

More than twenty years later, Vanderbilt's January 5, 1877 obituary in the National Republican offered an extraordinary reflection on that rivalry. Looking back on Vanderbilt's Wall Street career, the newspaper declared, "There was only one man who ever fought the Commodore to the end, and that was Jeremiah Hamilton." The obituary further noted that Hamilton continued battling Vanderbilt in court until he secured a settlement and concluded that "The Commodore respected him. He did not fear him, because he never feared anybody." Together, these contemporary newspaper accounts demonstrate that Hamilton earned the respect of America's most powerful businessman not through friendship, but through his determination, legal skill, and willingness to challenge him on equal terms.

Why This Story Matters

Jeremiah Hamilton matters because he challenges common assumptions about who shaped America's economic history. Most stories about Wall Street's early development focus almost exclusively on wealthy white businessmen. Hamilton's success shows that African Americans were also active participants in building the nation's financial system, even when racism tried to exclude them. His life reveals the complexity of history. He was ambitious, fearless, and highly skilled, but he was also involved in business practices that many people viewed as unethical. Hamilton's story reminds us that historical figures do not have to be perfect to be important. His success forced powerful white financiers to respect his abilities and helped prove that race did not determine intelligence, business talent, or leadership.

Legacy:

Jeremiah Hamilton's legacy is both impressive and complicated. At a time when most African Americans faced severe barriers to wealth and opportunity, he broke racial boundaries in one of the most exclusive and powerful financial centers in the world. Hamilton built his fortune by competing directly in the white-controlled world of Wall Street, becoming the first known Black millionaire in American finance. Unlike many later Black business leaders who found success by serving Black consumers, Hamilton operated almost entirely within the broader financial markets of New York City.

His greatest contribution was his innovative approach to investing. By the 1860s, he managed investment pools that allowed multiple investors to combine their money under his direction, a strategy that resembled modern hedge funds. He also used shareholder lawsuits and other aggressive business tactics to influence companies and protect his investments. His skill and persistence earned the respect of some of the most powerful businessmen of his era, including Cornelius Vanderbilt, who reportedly considered Hamilton one of the few opponents who fought him to the end.

Despite his remarkable success, Hamilton's story was largely forgotten after his death. He did not fit the traditional narratives of Black leadership that later generations celebrated, and his controversial business methods made him an uncomfortable figure for both Black and white communities. Yet his life challenges common assumptions about who participated in building America's economy. Today, historians increasingly recognize Hamilton as a pioneering financier whose achievements broaden our understanding of Wall Street, entrepreneurship, and the role African Americans played in shaping the nation's economic history. His story serves as a reminder that many influential Black Americans have been overlooked, not because they lacked significance, but because they did not fit the stories that history chose to remember.

Original Green-Wood Cemetery Interment Register (1875)
From the date of the very first burial at The Green-Wood Cemetery in 1840 up until 1937, handwritten burial ledgers were maintained in the Cemetery offices. These oversized, clothbound books—known as the Burial Registry—list every interment at the Cemetery, chronologically.

This handwritten entry from Green-Wood Cemetery's original burial register documents the interment of financier and entrepreneur Jeremiah G. Hamilton in May 1875. Created at the time of his burial, the register records details such as his residence, age, burial location, and other information maintained by the cemetery. As a contemporary record, it serves as direct evidence of Hamilton's life and death and is one of the few surviving documents connected to Wall Street's first known Black millionaire.

When Jeremiah G. Hamilton died in 1875, newspapers across the country reported that he was one of the wealthiest Black Americans in the nation. This burial record from Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn confirms his interment on May 22, 1875. Although Hamilton became one of the most successful financiers of the nineteenth century, his story was largely forgotten for generations. Records like this help historians recover the lives of influential people whose contributions were left out of many history books.
