A. L. Lewis - Florida’s First African American Millionaire

Businessman • Community Leader • Visionary

A. L. Lewis believed that lasting economic progress required strong institutions that could serve and strengthen the African American community. His leadership helped build organizations that provided financial security, encouraged entrepreneurship, and expanded opportunities for future generations. While Lewis's portrait honors the man whose vision inspired these efforts, the headquarters of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Enterprise Center, which now occupies the historic site of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, represents the enduring legacy of the institution he helped establish. Together, these images illustrate how Lewis's commitment to economic empowerment extended beyond his own lifetime, proving that visionary leadership can leave a lasting impact on both communities and the institutions that continue to serve them.

Overview:

Abraham Lincoln (A.L.) Lewis (1865–1947) was a businessman, community leader, and one of the most influential African Americans in Florida during the early twentieth century. Born shortly after the Civil War, Lewis had only an elementary school education, but he became a powerful advocate for economic opportunity in the Black community. In 1901, he helped establish the Afro-American Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville, Florida, at a time when many insurance companies refused to serve African Americans. Under his leadership, the company grew into one of the largest Black-owned businesses in the South. Lewis became Florida’s first African American millionaire and used his success to support education, business development, and political participation. In 1935, he helped create American Beach, a resort community where African Americans could safely enjoy recreation and relaxation safely, from racial harassment and violence.

Primary Sources Spotlights:

This 1937 advertisement promoted American Beach, the oceanfront resort community established by A. L. Lewis and the Afro-American Life Insurance Company. Created during the era of segregation, American Beach provided African American families with a safe and welcoming place to vacation, own cottages, and enjoy recreational opportunities that were often unavailable at other Florida beaches. It quickly became one of the nation's best-known Black seaside destinations.

Why This Story Matters:

A.L. Lewis showed that economic success could be a powerful tool for advancing civil rights and community progress. During a period when segregation limited opportunities for African Americans, he helped create businesses, jobs, and financial services that strengthened Black communities. Lewis also understood that wealth should benefit others. He encouraged education, homeownership, and civic involvement while supporting institutions that helped African Americans build stable futures. Through the creation of American Beach, he provided a place where Black families could enjoy freedom, dignity, and belonging when many public spaces excluded them. His life demonstrates how business leadership, community service, and political engagement can work together to create lasting change.

Legacy:

One of A.L. Lewis's most important achievements was helping create American Beach in 1935. During the era of segregation, many beaches, hotels, and vacation destinations either excluded African Americans or provided only limited access. Lewis and his business partners purchased land on Amelia Island and developed a beach community where Black families could vacation, own property, build businesses, and enjoy recreational activities in a safe and welcoming environment.

American Beach quickly became a popular destination for African Americans from Florida and across the South. Visitors traveled long distances to enjoy a place where they could relax with dignity during a time when many public spaces were closed to them. The community attracted educators, business leaders, entertainers, and musicians, becoming a center of Black culture and achievement. More than a vacation spot, American Beach stood as a powerful symbol of economic independence, community pride, and the belief that African Americans deserved the same opportunities and freedoms as other Americans.

The impact of A.L. Lewis extends far beyond American Beach. Through the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, he helped create jobs, expand access to financial services, and demonstrate that African Americans could build successful businesses despite discrimination and legal barriers. He also encouraged education, civic engagement, and financial responsibility, teaching future generations the importance of what he called the "Three B's"—the Bible, school books, and bank books.

Today, American Beach remains an important historic site that preserves the story of Black entrepreneurship, resilience, and community life during segregation. Lewis's descendants, including educator and anthropologist Johnnetta Betsch Cole and preservationist MaVynee Betsch, have continued his commitment to education, leadership, historic preservation, and social justice. A.L. Lewis is remembered not simply as Florida's first African American millionaire, but as a visionary leader who used his success to expand opportunities for others and create a lasting legacy that continues to inspire new generations.

Discussion Questions:

1. American Beach was created because African Americans were excluded from many public spaces. How can access to recreational spaces affect a person’s sense of belonging and citizenship?

2. Although A. L. Lewis had limited formal schooling, he never stopped learning. His curiosity led him to read, seek guidance from mentors, learn from both his successes and failures, and apply those lessons through hard work and perseverance. What can you learn from Lewis about the many ways education continues long after the school day—and even beyond graduation?

3. Learning history is about more than remembering facts—it is about asking questions, examining evidence, and considering multiple perspectives. After learning about A. L. Lewis, what questions do you now have about American history that you didn't think to ask before?

Reflection Prompt:

1. Americans are often taught that success comes to those who work hard and never give up. A. L. Lewis certainly worked very hard. If hard work alone guaranteed success, why did Lewis have to build his own insurance company and create American Beach instead of simply using the institutions that already existed? What does his experience suggest about the opportunities that were available to different groups of Americans, regardless of how hard they worked? When people face barriers today because of race, religion, gender, disability, or other differences, what kinds of solutions are most likely to create lasting change?
